Hi Everyone,
As I mentioned in the “Boeing On Campus” post, I wanted to take the opportunity to provide some tips to help you prepare for your interim design reviews. As part of Boeing’s increased involvement with M2I, we’ll try to post helpful information like this throughout the year. I would encourage you ask about similar topics if you have interest via this forum.
Presentation Tips
** Keep each presentation slide at a high level; think of the slide as reference material to what you will say in the presentation
** Avoid creating “eye charts”; if you can’t read the slide in less than one minute, there is too much information on it
** Try to keep each bulleted line to seven words or less
** Do not feel like you need to make complete sentences; the slides are supporting material, not all of the material (i.e. a written report)
** Be careful with significant figures; just because a computer can calculate data to 15 significant figures does not mean it makes sense to present the data that way
** Consider using “tag lines” for each slide; a “tag line” is a single sentence (5 to 7 words summary) at the bottom of the slide that captures the overall message of the slideBefore I provide some presenting tips, I want to be candid about the topic of presenting. Giving an oral presentation is probably one of the most challenging things anyone has to do. I have been giving oral presentations for a long time at Boeing and there are still times when I find it challenging. That being said, with practice, you will become more and more comfortable giving oral presentations.
Presenting Tips
** Practice, Practice, Practice
** Practice as a team before the interim design review to give each other feedback
** Practice in front of a mirror, solo, to get comfortable standing and making eye contact
** Prior to starting your presentation, take a moment to gather your thoughts
** Make a conscious effort to speak slowly; you will naturally talk more quickly giving a presentation
** If you get lost during your presentation; stop, take a breath, gather yourself and restartIf anyone has questions on these tips, please feel free to respond back to this post. This way everyone can learn together.
Go Cyclones!
