Design, Build, Fly (DBF)

PROJECT MISSION

ISU students can showcase their engineering skills in the AIAA Design Build Fly competition by designing and building a radio-controlled aircraft to complete a set of missions. It is a challenging opportunity for real-world problem solving and promotes teamwork, creativity, and innovation.

DBF team members collaborate with one another as they construct their aircraft.

Project Goal

Successfully design, build and fly a stable and well flying aircraft to compete with at the Design/Build/Fly competition. The team must complete at least one flight test to demonstrate to the judges at competition that our team will be ready. The team’s goals for the semester also include the successful manufacture of the aircraft and the production of a detailed report documenting the design, testing, and manufacturing process.

Project Deliverables

  1. The primary deliverable for this project is the fully constructed and tested aircraft, which will be designed to meet all specifications for the 2025 AIAA Design Build Fly competition.

The second key deliverable is a project report, which will document the design, testing, and manufacturing processes leading up to the competition.

The final deliverable will be the competition evaluation report, which will summarize the aircraft’s performance during testing and how it meets the specific criteria of the 2025 competition.

Next Steps

  1. Moving forward, the team plans to continue crafting and testing their aircraft. They are excited to see their hard work come to fruition.
